Twill

A twill fabric construction, the weft travels over 1-3 warp ends, then passes under 1-3 ends, creating a diagonal effect.

Warp

In weaving, there are 2 types of yarn: The warp which runs up & down, and the weft which runs left - right. The warp yarns of a denim fabric are dyed indigo.

Selvedge

The woven edge of shuttle-loomed fabric. The selvedge is typically white with a colored thread running through the middle, usually red. Selvege denim is more epxensive because it involves slower, more narrow shuttle looms & uses higher quality fabrics with long-staple cotton.

Slasher

Rope Dyeing

Threads of denim yarn that are twisted into a rope. It is dipped into indigo dye & oxidizes, then repeated to desired shade.

Slub

Nebs or lumps in cotton yarn. Desired imperfections, slubs giving an uneven appearance. "Slubby" denim has a lot of character.

Indigo

An ancient dye that gives denim its unique blue hue. Originally, indigo dye came from plants but today is produced synthetically.
